Courses: Ilfracombe & Saunton

Situated on top of the rugged cliffs of the North Devon coast, every tee has an awe-inspiring view over the sea to the Welsh Coast, Lundy Island and as far as the eye can see on the Atlantic horizon. With its own micro-climate and impeccable course maintenance Ilfracombe Golf Club is able to welcome guests all year round who wish to test themselves on a truly unique course.

The land at Saunton has hosted golf since 1897 and is today’s premier golf course in the West Country since Herbert Fowler (famed designer of Walton Heath, The Berkshire, and Delamere Forest to name just a few) created the East Course in the 1920s. The East Course was host to the 1937 English Amateur when Frank Pennink was victorious and the R&A Boys Amateur in 2019, as well as many more championships in between.

The West Course at Saunton emulates the general characteristics of the East Course but has its own distinctions and offers no weak hole. The West requires clever and strong placing of your ball off the tee to get at the greens with your approach. The green complexes demand 100% commitment but are perfectly fair if you choose the right line on which to run in your ball. Recent adjustments to the West Course put it right up there with the East Course in terms of presentation and design.

Property Description

Tucked away in the old side streets around Ilfracombe’s popular and pretty harbour, you will find the little treasure of Harbour Hideaway, formerly two cottages with a separate staircase to each bedroom, one at each end of the house. The original parts of this fisherman’s cottage date back to circa 1750. It has been lovingly converted to be a comfortable hideaway with the added bonus of its own private hot tub with a retractable canopy. Stylish furnishings along with a multi-fuel burner, oak beams and partly exposed stone walls make it a cosy retreat in cooler months. Located a short walk from both the harbour and town centre, the cottage has much to offer guests during their stay. There is a large range of pubs, Michelin star restaurants and shops to choose from around Ilfracombe’s centre, whilst the famous Tunnels Beaches is just around the corner. A short walk away is Ilfracombe’s harbour area, with its quayside, lifeboat station, church overlooking the Bristol Channel and not forgetting the much talked about ’Verity’ sculpture by Damien Hurst. This is a retreat perfect for families and groups of friends but also makes an idyllic love nest for two.
There are numerous attractions within easy reach of the house, including the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle and the Lynton to Lynmouth Cliff Railway. At Croyde and Woolacombe, you will find some of the best and cleanest surf beaches in the country, as well as many smaller coves and bays. Exmoor and the South West Coast Path are located close by, and on a clear day the views can be spectacular of the surrounding coast and countryside from these well-known walking areas. There are National Trust properties at Arlington and Knightshayes, and the RHS gardens at Rosemoor in Great Torrington. In Barnstaple, a 20-minute drive, there are pantomimes in the winter season at the Queen’s Theatre, and the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe puts on various shows and performances leading up to Christmas. They also have a lantern festival parade and light switch on which is quite a big local event. Golf available nearby. Beach 200 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

After a busy day exploring Ilfracombe’s harbour, shops and beach, return to this cottage and relax in the private hot tub.
