Courses: Lyme Regis – Axe Cliff – Honiton – Bridport & West Dorset – Cricket St. Thomas

An outstandingly beautiful vista awaits all who play Bridport with scenic views not only over the sea and shore but inland to the two highest points in Dorset, Pilsdon Pen, and Lewesdon Hill. The course abounds with wildlife and the singing of a skylark is a regular sound to be heard. The signature hole, the 6th, is only 129 yards long but has a drop of over 90 feet with one commentator rating it in the top 100 holes in the world. A dry-stone wall features on four of the holes, one of which is the 371 yard 13th. The legendary Max Faulkner drove the green (365 yards at the time) in an exhibition match in 1952. With a variable wind, changing weather and a challenging course, a round at Bridport is a test for all levels of golfer.

The 18 hole par 71 course at Lyme Regis occupies a cliff top site with coastal views towards Portland Bill and overlooks the Historical town and World Heritage Site of Lyme Regis, It is a challenging test, with a sea breeze, ideal for all abilities. The Clubhouse, overlooking the 18th green makes the ideal location to unwind and relax.

Cricket St. Thomas Golf Club is located off the A30 near Chard in Somerset. The club has over 80 years of history and provides members and visitors alike the chance to play on a beautiful parkland course with outstanding views across the surrounding countryside.

Axe Cliff is a par 70 at just under 6000 yards with a good mix of par 3, 4 and 5 holes. Some are short and tricky and some are long and scenic. The first six holes are the most challenging to walk but the course flattens out from the 8th, 9th 10th and even flatter next to the cliffs with some spectacular finishing holes as you drop down off the cliff side. The final hole is a par 3 across the Jurassic walk and has been described as one of the best par 3’s in the country. Any blind holes are well marked with tall poles indicating the line of shot and explicit course plans on each tee. Plenty of buggies are available as well as inexpensive club hire, pull trolleys and golf shop on site.

Honiton Golf Club is a lovely course set high in the hills to the east of Honiton town with splendid views across to the Blackdowns. Established in 1896 the greens are maintained in excellent condition as are the fairways. The fourth tee is the first technical challenge with a number of others starting out tight. Although in the hills the course itself is relatively flat to play, but it does boast beautiful views in all directions, and benefits include smart clubhouse facilities with a friendly atmosphere.

Accessible within 4 minutes by car or via a 25-minute downhill walk over fields and along the riverbank, Lyme Regis is one of England’s most memorable small towns. It is famous as the setting for both the story and film of ’The French Lieutenant’s Woman’, with its harbour, bright with boats, streets of elegant colour-washed buildings, lofty cliffs and a great sweep of sea. For nature lovers, the area has some of the most diverse scenery in the country: Lyme Bay sweeps round from the National Nature Reserve on the Dowlands Cliffs in an uninterrupted arc along the huge bank of shingle that is Chesil Beach, all the way to the limestone slab of the Isle of Portland. The 626ft Golden Cap, a breath-taking viewpoint and part of a lovely 2,000-acre National Trust estate, is the highest point on England’s south coast, a World Heritage Site. It is an easy drive to Bridport, Honiton, Sidmouth, Exeter and Dorchester. For families, there are many lovely beaches close at hand, and Crealy Theme Park near Exeter.
