Courses: Sedbergh – Appleby & Kirkby Lonsdale

Set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside and just 10 miles from the Lake District, Sedbergh Golf Course has been described by many as one of the most scenic and tranquil in the north of England. At 5900 yards (par 70) the golf course certainly isn’t the longest, but it provides a stern test for golfers of all abilities. It has been professionally designed and constructed to USGA standards, and has a beautiful balance of holes, with quaint par 3s, tough 5s and a real mixture of par 4s, some of which are driveable, others stretching well over four hundred yards. You’ll need to be accurate if you want to score well, with tree lined fairways and water aplenty ready to punish anything slightly off line.

Appleby Golf Club can only be described as an ‘Inland Links’ course, The Open Champion, Willie Fernie used the contours of the land and the heather and bracken features to create the course to great effect. Sitting on a bedrock of Sandstone, Appleby is free draining so is playable all year round. The greens are renowned for offering the best throughout the year.

Kirkby Lonsdale golf course is set in more than 160 acres of parkland in the beautiful Lune Valley and is the areas pride and joy. Established in 1991, the course has reached a level of maturity and conditioning that makes it a pure pleasure to play. The Head Greenkeeper and his team work hard to provide all golfers with true putting surfaces and excellent fairways throughout the year.

Property Description

Waitby School was built on Waitby Fell in 1680 by James Highmore, a local to the area, for the children of Waitby and Smardale. About a mile and a half west of Kirkby Stephen, Waitby is said to have been an ancient market town, with a castle, chapel and cemetery, but no trace of either is now to be seen. However, the school remains, standing proud on the fellside and, having been purchased recently by another local family, has been lovingly restored, in conjunction with English Heritage, to offer luxurious holiday accommodation.  The property stands alone and enjoys uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside, dotted with livestock and the occasional farmer and tractor at “doin up time”.
Many original features have been retained in the restoration of the School, including wood panelling, wooden double doors, the outside boys lavatory, complete with seat, and, of course, the school bell. After much careful planning, these characterful features have been successfully combined with state of the art fixtures and fittings to create and individual holiday home of great distinction, and a most unique holiday experience.
