Surfers Retreat is set just at the edge of Braunton, yet within a few minutes walk of a good selection of shops, pubs and bistros. Braunton is the village that gave the Burrows its name. It’s just 2 miles inland, yet it’s the area’s hub. Find surf shops, restaurants, the world’s best fish and chips (so they say) and lots of shops and boutiques. As the centre of the North Devon surf scene, Braunton is also home to the brilliant Museum of British Surfing. It’s small but perfectly formed and the ideal base for your next holiday to Devon.
It is also just a stone’s throw away from Saunton Sands, 2¼ miles (a 7-minute drive), a massive expanse of beach with thousands of hectares of dunes behind it, one of the biggest dune systems in the UK known as Braunton Burrows. There are dykes, unique and ancient field systems, and dunes – lots of dunes. Walkers love it and it’s great for dogs too. Saunton Sands is a fabulous sandy beach that’s a couple of miles long. At the southern tip, Crow Point, where it meets the Taw and Torridge Estuary, you could easily find yourself alone among the brightly coloured hulks of long forgotten fishing boats and weathered wooden piles.
Saunton Golf Club is just 1¾ miles (a 5-minute drive) from the property. The Tarka Trail, perfect for cyclists and walkers, is only a few yards from this holiday retreat making it an ideal location from which to explore this lovely part of North Devon.
