Colchester Golf Club has been voted the No.1 course in North Essex. It was founded in 1907 with our beautiful, tree-lined course designed by none other than 5-times Open Champion James Braid. The course is 6,357 yards long with two par-5s, four par-3s and a par of 70 (73 for ladies).Colchester Golf Club’s fast-running, well established fairways provide a wonderful test of golf. They have more than 70 bunkers to catch out your wayward shots and, best of all, the subtly-contoured greens are acknowledged as some of the very best in the County. The Essex boasts a superb 18-hole Championship course and 9-hole short course. Both have won critical acclaim for the testing features and detailed presentation – a must-play for any golfer. The 7,000 yard, par-73 woodland course has won critical acclaim for its challenging yet fair features. The course has a range of water features requiring careful thought and accuracy, while the signature 13th hole features a few strategically placed bunkers to challenge all levels of golfer! Perfect for beginners and those wanting to practice their short game, the 9-hole short course boasts perfectly manicured greens, tees and fairways. This short course is not without its challenges, with some tricky par 4s and one par 5.
Five Lakes Resort is home to two of the best golf courses in Essex. The tees and greens are meticulously maintained, and present a challenge to golfers both novice and experienced. The Lakes course, makes the most of the beautiful surroundings. The tees and greens have been built to USGA standards. To score well on the 6,313 yard course, you will need long drives and accurate approaches. As the name suggests, water does feature across this challenging par 72 course. A slightly less challenging course, is The Links Course with a par 71 and 5,981 yards. It offers plenty of variety and challenges for even the most experienced player, with its narrow fairways and well-placed greens that require accurate approach play.

The surrounding area is a delight to explore: there are many footpaths in the village and Flatford Mill, in the heart of Constable Country is 4 miles away. Dedham village is 3 miles, where guests can hire a rowing boat on the River Stour or enjoy walking in the unspoilt countryside. Farthings is also conveniently located for golf at nearby Stoke-by-Nayland (2 miles) whilst keen gardeners may enjoy a visit to Beth Chatto’s Garden, 7 miles. Nearby Colchester, famous for being the oldest town in England, has a castle and museum set in attractive parkland that stretches down to the River Colne, a zoo and an interesting range of shops, restaurants, galleries and pubs. Colchester also has a rail link to London which takes 50 minutes, so visitors can enjoy a day in the busy capital city and then return to the peace and tranquillity of Farthings. For a day by the sea, guests can choose between the sunshine coast of Essex at Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze and Clacton or the Heritage coastline of nearby Suffolk where the beaches at Felixstowe, Aldeburgh, Southwold or Walberswick can be enjoyed.
